Plastic Surgery TV

» Cosmetic Surgery

All too many people get their notion of reality from TV even without reality programming. Research publishing in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery says that most people seeking cosmetic surgery are stimulated by television programs like Extreme Makeover.

But who is more likely to watch such a show that those already interested in surgical prettification?

… Whether you call it an obsession with the superficial or a commendable drive to be your best, there’s no doubt that many Americans feel more pressure to look perfect. “There’s certainly an emphasis on youth [in our culture],” says Singer. “And certainly the public is more self-indulgent than in the past. … There’s an emphasis on self-improvement. For some people that’s a new suit or makeup. Plastic surgery is just an extension of that. It’s one more option.”

Are people deciding to get plastic surgery based on TV reality shows?
