Gwen Stephani: Lolita or Dominatrix?

Gwen Stefani’s attire is generating angry debate in Live Journal’s Gothic & Lolita Fashion Community:
At issue was Gwen Stefani’s Alice in Wonderland costume in her “What You Waiting For” video. Alice, with her prim white collar, poofy sleeves and bell-shaped skirts, is an informal muse for many G.L.’s, as they call themselves, and the sense was that Ms. Stefani had bastardized the look by exposing blue ruffled panties and laced-up high heels, making the look more dominatrix than demure.
“That outfit looks nothing like Lolita,” read one of the more restrained posts. “It’s not even original, it looks like what Britney wore when she kissed Madonna.”

I personally think that Gwen ruined the Lolita look, and the whole Japanese Fashion community. Her whole album was on Harajuku and she knows nothing about it.

I agree- I never even bought the album, but fived minutes of searching on the web tells you that much.
She’s pretty much taken the Harajuku styles, more just Lolita, and slutterized it. It’s awfully. People take me for some Gothic- styled Gwen freak whenever I go out in my Goth-Loli clothes.
Anyway, I wouldn’t have minded as much if she had done a bit of research into Goth-Loli fashion and not gotten it so awfully wrong. And the fixiation with Alice in Wonderland…

Alice in Wonderland is really something that truly inspired G.L. Though i agree with you all.She does look more of a pin-up than a G.L.

Actually, lolita is influenced by victorian style, and is suposed to be very modest and elegant, and by her taking this style, this subculture, and ruining it, basically putting it out there to be a sexual expression is utterly wrong. And I don’t think I can actually voice my hate for her strongly enough. It’s like a slap in the face to japanese subculture-and it’s very offensive to a true lolita.
