Supermodel Naomi Campbell vs. the press

The British Law Lords have ruled that The Daily Mirror didn't have the right to report that Supermodel Naomi Campbell had gone to Narcotics Anonymous meetings. Britain's libel laws have always seemed strange to Americans. Gossip is protected by the Constitution. I'm all in favor of privacy but can't help but feel mild contempt for people who earn their living by being famous then get peevish when something they'd rather be concealed becomes public.

Mirror editor Piers Morgan, already under fire this week over his newspaper's publication of pictures claiming to show British soldiers abusing an Iraqi detainee, poured scorn on the decision.

"This is a very good day for lying, drug-abusing prima donnas who want to have their cake with the media, and the right to then shamelessly guzzle it with their Cristal champagne," he said in a statement.

"If ever there was a less deserving case for creating what is effectively a back-door privacy law it would be Miss Campbell -- but that's showbiz," he added.
