Belle’s book is a compilation of about 18 months of diary entries from the anonymous award-winning weblog of the same name at http://www.belledejour.co.uk/. This format doesn’t offer much in the way of plot or character development; it’s more a series of reflections, often witty, on the practicalities of the life she has chosen. Depilation, hairdressing, the obsessive acquisition of working lingerie - the maintenance factor is highish. Belle’s non-commercial sexual partners are dealt with, but they usually serve as shadowy foils for her commentary. Everyone is nicknamed: there are four men who are A1, A2, and so on.
