Exchanging romantic partners, sometimes called wife-swapping in America, has become something of a ‘social movement’ they say in France. France’s Roman Catholic clergy aren’t amused.

The critics agree that the film avoids vulgarity. Auteuil said the love scenes belonged more to “the world of fairy-tales” than to that of échangisme, which in recent years has spawned a lifestyle industry of clubs and magazines. “This film is anything but unhealthy,” said the star.

The directors were similarly defensive. “We did not want to provoke anyone,” said Jean-Marie Larrieu. “We simply wanted to find a soft way of approaching a taboo. Then we had this desire for a story like this not to turn into a horror. In general, in the cinema, pleasure comes with a price. Here nobody pays. Nobody falls into the abyss.”
