You would be entitled to feel pretty gutted. But gutted doesn’t even come close to encapsulating my emotions upon hearing that Madonna has decided to renounce her ‘sexy’ past. One of, if not the, most important female figures in popular culture for the past three decades has decided that the game is up and she wants to wipe the slate clean. No, there won’t be an amnesty on all your old Madge memorabilia, don’t worry - picture the scene as people from all walks of life trudge down to their local polis station trailing fingerless lace gloves, gold conic bras and riding whips, depending on which Madonna they fell head over heels for in the wardrobe department - but, as ever, the power of her words have a distinctly era-defining ring to them.
