When Edinburgh back Hugo Southwell trotted down the runway with nothing more than a natty pair of green floral Eden Park bathers and a bouquet of flowers to protect his modesty there were fears he might be eaten alive by the ladies who lunch, so raucous was the reception he received.

Fortunately, the rugby models, who also sported realistic make-up scars, survived the experience but there could be little doubt from his enthusiasm and swagger that had Mr Hastings not opted to earn his corn playing rugby he might have punted for a career on the catwalk.
